Our goal for 2020 is to strengthen the role of faculty in “Shared Governance.”

“Shared governance is a set of guidelines about the various roles and authority of the board, faculty, and administration in such things as academic decisions, budget decisions, selection of the president, and other operational decisions.Effective shared governance more often takes the form of a systems approach, one in which faculty, board members, and administrators actively engage to share responsibility for identifying and pursuing an aligned set of mission-driven sustainable outcomes and priorities.” (from S.C. Bahls, Shared Governance in Times of Change: Practical Guide for Universities and Colleges, on the website of the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges [AGB].)

The Pepperdine University Chapter of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) was launched in May, 2016.

Our Chapter’s Mission:

  • DEFEND ACADEMIC FREEDOM AT PEPPERDINE UNIVERSITY AND THROUGHOUT ACADEME

  • PROMOTE FACULTY PARTICIPATION IN GOVERNANCE AT PEPPERDINE UNIVERSITY

  • PROTECT AND ADVANCE THE PROFESSIONAL STATUS AND INTERESTS OF ALL FACULTY

  • PROMOTE AND SUPPORT A CULTURE OF INCLUSIVITY AND TOLERANCE

OUR CHAPTER HOSTED MEETING OF CALIFORNIA CONFERENCE OF AAUP

The photo above is from our roundtable discussion "Efforts to Improve Shared Governance at Private Universities." This was a case study presentation where Pepperdine University and Whittier College faculty discussed the story of our faculties’ efforts to achieve not only a “place at the table,” but recognition that our voice should have weight in decision-making processes.

“Faculty representatives should be selected by the faculty according to procedures determined by the faculty."

Faculty Participation in Budgeting

(from AAUP statement: The Role of the Faculty in Budgetary and Salary Matters)

The faculty should participate both in the preparation of the total institutional budget and (within the framework of the total budget) in decisions relevant to the further apportioning of its specific fiscal divisions (salaries, academic programs, tuition, physical plant and grounds, and so on). The soundness of resulting decisions should be enhanced if an elected representative committee of the faculty participates in deciding on the overall allocation of institutional resources and the proportion to be devoted directly to the academic program. This committee should be given access to all information that it requires to perform its task effectively, and it should have the opportunity to confer periodically with representatives of the administration and governing board.
